Dussehra 2023: Legends and Laughter

In India, there’s a time of year when the air turns festive, and the streets hum with excitement – It’s Dussehra, a captivating blend of myth and merriment.

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a unique celebration that fuses ancient legends with modern revelry. Picture this: towering effigies of demons taking flight, centuries-old tales springing to life, and the irresistible scent of sweet treats wafting through the air.

Celebrating Dussehra involves a range of vibrant traditions…

  • People watch Ram-Lila performances, where the epic tale of Lord Rama unfolds.
  • The festival continues with the symbolic burning of towering effigies of the demon king Ravana.
  • Devotees visit temples, exchange gifts, and share festive meals with loved ones.
  • Colourful dances like Dandiya and Garba bring communities together, and there are often art and craft fairs to explore.
  • Charity and community gatherings add a touch of generosity and togetherness to the celebration.
  • The word “Dussehra” is derived from two Sanskrit words – “Dasha” meaning ten, and “Hara” meaning defeat.
