1. The Grand Egyptian Museum
Now fully open, all twelve galleries, including the complete Tutankhamun collection under one roof for the first time. Book the 9 am or 11 am slot in advance; it’s mandatory, and capped at 8,000 visitors a day.
2. Giza Pyramids & Sphinx
Barely two kilometres from the GEM, so pair the two. Go early, before the September heat turns brutal, or catch the evening Sound & Light Show instead.
3. The Old Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square
Still holding over 120,000 items despite the GEM transfer. An hour or two here offers useful contrast, and the odd piece the new museum hasn’t got round to moving yet.
4. Khan el-Khalili Bazaar & Islamic Cairo
Save this one for late afternoon, once the heat breaks. Lamp-lit alleys, old mosques and a bazaar that properly comes alive after dark.
5. Citadel of Salah El-Din
Panoramic views over the whole city, best caught in the cool of the morning before the haze sets in.
6. Coptic Cairo
The Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue and the quiet, shaded streets of the old Christian quarter — tradition holds this is where the Holy Family sheltered during their flight into Egypt. A slower, more contemplative half-day.
7. Al-Azhar Park
Genuinely green, genuinely cool, and a fine spot for dinner with the skyline as backdrop.
8. A Nile Dinner Cruise
Cairo’s own bookend evening: buffet, Tanoura and belly dance, the illuminated city sliding past.
