Over the past year, we have all been living intimately with uncertainty. We’ve made plans, rescheduled, tried to make other plans and had to reschedule again. With all the devastation happening globally, it’s challenging to stay centered. In light of all this instability, we’ve curated a list of ways (according to the experts) to help us stay stable and resilient.
Find Ways to Unwind
With stress the cause of so many modern health issues, it’s essential to retain inner calm and strength. Wellness experts recommend finding ways to move out of the sympathetic overdrive (fight and flight mode) and back into the parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ state as often as possible. According to these experts, developing a regular yoga and fitness practice helps as does cooking, reading and listening to music. Overdose on inspiring podcasts and watch inspiring films – do whatever it takes to stay healthy and happy.
Be of Service
We rise by elevating others. There’s nothing more empowering than being able to give back during these times. If you are in a position to help in any way, check out the Karma Mayday initiative launched this week to get oxygen quickly to India – it’s all hands on deck right now.
Get Outdoors
We only need to step outside to experience the largest wellness ‘industry’ of all – it’s in our gardens, our trees, the air that we breathe, and the stars in the sky. While not everyone is able to get outdoors right now, you may be able to bring a touch of the outdoors inside. There’s lots of ‘outdoor experiences’ available online now including virtual travel, hikes, and other adventures. Other suggestions: Grow herbs, watch nature documentaries, decorate your home in soothing and natural colours and textures as well as indoor plants that help to boost oxygen flow inside your home.
Go Local
Keeping our small and medium businesses alive by shopping locally has become an important issue in these unprecedented times. It’s so easy to do – whenever you need to buy something, think about how you can purchase this locally. It may not always be possible, but when we support the local farmers, growers and businesses in our region, we start to build sustainable and thriving local economies – all over the world.
Go Inward
The power of listening to our own voice is also essential to staying internally balanced and positive. Guided meditations are an obvious choice – and the good news is there are so many to select from online (and many of these are free). It’s such a simple yet powerful discipline to put aside time each day and sit without any distractions and learn to listen to the truth that is inside of us all.
Embrace Self-Care
During this pandemic, millions around the world have experienced unprecedented anxiety, fear, loneliness and stress. Which is why wellness experts recommend to develop and maintain a self-care routine. Good sleep, daily fitness, nutritious food and time for relaxation. The premise being – when we take care of ourselves, we are able to take better care of others.
