Six Nations Stakes Are High!

This past weekend marks the beginning of the 2023 Six Nations Championship – and it looks set to be one of the most exciting competitions in recent times, as the northern hemisphere teams look forward to the upcoming Rugby World Cup, which takes place in Paris in September… who will be the in-form teams capable of taking on the might of the southern hemisphere sides like South Africa, Australia and of course New Zealand? What is more intriguing is the fact that controversially sacked England coach Eddie Jones has decamped to his native Australia to coach the Wallabies… how will England fare under their new Head Coach Steve Borthwick?

The Red Roses faced a stern test this weekend as they took on a resurgent Scotland in a riproaring Calcutta Cup. They were unable to avenge the 20-17 loss they suffered last time out, however, as Scotland showed some of their best form of recent times as well as grit and determination to win 29-23 – the first time in history they’ve earned consecutive wins at Twickenham. Nevertheless, England under new coach Steve Borthwick had much to feel positive about – playing high intensity rugby with some brilliant set moves to win their tries. But it was man of the match winner Van de Merwe who had jaws truly dropping, with an incredible solo try from within his own half, beating five opponents in the process. What a match!

Meanwhile, Wales took on tournament favourites Ireland at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and once again were left wanting as they struggle to find form. Ireland were dominant, winning 34-10. Champions France survived a scare against Italy, with a late try that earned them a 29-24 win. Italy seem to at last be showing themselves to be real contenders in the Six Nations.
