Jon Sa Trinxa : Balearic Legend

The role of Ibiza in the evolution of dance music is now the stuff of legend – and music man Jon Sa Trinxa is a big part of that story. Hailing from a small English village, Jon started DJing in 1987 – right on the cusp of the fabled ‘summer of love’ that kickstarted the rave scene in the UK. But it was his residency at the eponymous Sa Trinxa, Salinas Beach in his beloved Ibiza that really established him as one of the second wave pioneers of the Balearic sound.

Balearic music is a hard category to pin down, as it emerged in part out of a lack of access: the godfather of Balearic is Alfredo, who in the eighties was blending new wave, punk, funk, dub, disco, proto-house music – anything that would work on the dancefloor at sunset in the atmosphere that is peculiar to Ibiza and that dare we say Bali shares to some extent!

Jon’s residency at Sa Trinxa ran from 1993 – 2019 – the longest Ibiza has ever seen.  At the same time, he was travelling around the world carrying the Balearic flag. During the winter months,  Jon would often travel to Asia, marking the start of a long standing relationship with Karma Group whose barefoot luxury ethos perfectly matches Jon’s beachside sunset-ready sets.

Jon has been a mainstay at Karma Kandara for many years now, bringing nearly four decades of musical knowledge to bear on his sets at Karma Beach and other venues. So we’re delighted that he has agreed to become Karma Group’s Music Curator, responsible for all of our musical offerings across the Group – from spas to beach clubs to eateries and more.

That means you can expect to hear a genuine kaleidoscope of genre and period-spanning music perfectly curated for each destination. He’ll be developing playlists for all of our resorts around the globe – as well as performing live of course at venues including Karma Beach and our freshly minted Karma Two Palms in Koh Samui.

You can get a taste of  Jon’s sounds here as well as sundowner sets by a host of world renowned DJs over on our Karma Beach Sessions channel.
