Staff Spotlight meet Rai Artawan

This week’s Staff Spotlight is extra special, as we celebrate the recent promotion of one of Karma Group’s outstanding team members – Rai Artawan!

Pak Rai has been working at Karma Kandara for 4 years and he has accomplished great contributions and support in his role – developing and supervising all the teams in the Food & Beverage Service Department and has been involved in guest experience to support the guest service operations.

Hence, we’re very excited to announce his promotion to Guest Experience & Operations Manager!

Hi Pak Rai, first of all, a huge congratulations on your recent promotion – What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry, and how did you end up at Karma Kandara?

I want to use my skills to make a positive difference in people’s lives and experiences. I have patience and strong communication, problem-solving and customer service skills. I also enjoy multitasking and working in an energetic environment, I learned this from my parents who had a small Warung back in the village where I was born.

Karma Kandara was one of my bucket lists to work with, as the company has such an amazing service culture and a unique place

Can you share a little-known fact or hidden gem about Karma Kandara that guests might not be aware of but should definitely experience?

I would say our new Spa at Karma Beach, is located at the Gazebo on the Cliffside where guests can experience the breeze and the sound of the waves while they have a massage, totally a relaxing experience

In the world of luxury hotels, staying updated with the latest trends and innovations is crucial. How do you ensure that Karma Kandara remains at the forefront of luxury hospitality?

Competitors check – I actively check on what other leading hotels are doing and stay ahead of the curve. I can do this by joining hotels and other associations that are related to our business needs and attending some exhibitions/networking events.

Tell us about a destination outside of Indonesia on your travel bucket list and why it’s a must-visit.

Egypt, I dream of seeing the pyramids and iconic Landmarks: Egypt is famous for iconic landmarks such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the temples of Luxor, which draw tourists from around the world. The Nile, the world’s longest river, flows through Egypt, as Karma also has the Karma Karnak boat and surely the Egyptian cuisine offers a variety of flavourful dishes,

Describe your ideal day off. How do you like to spend your free time when you’re not at work?

My Ideal day off would be: I am an early person, so I wake up at 5 am, start my morning training for running or cycling, have breakfast, and read a few emails.  In the afternoon I love to have my lunch and my coffee with my wife and watch a movie on Netflix and have dinner at home with my kids.

If you could choose one famous person to visit your property and you plan their guest experience for the day – who would it be and why?

Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who is widely considered one of the greatest marathon runners in history. He is best known for his remarkable achievements in the sport, including breaking the marathon world record and winning multiple Olympic and World Championship medals.

As we have the ‘stairway to heaven’ challenge he can be our main guest to join the challenge and inspire or attract more people from all over Indonesia to join the challenge, which is good for Karma Kandara

Lastly, Bali is renowned for its mouthwatering cuisine – what is your favourite local dish that our Members may not have savoured before?

Lawar Lindung, Lawar is a mix of finely chopped eels, vegetables, grated coconut and spices. Why is it different to the usual lawar?  Lawar meat is usually chicken or pork, so what makes lindung special is the eel – Balinese eels are very tasty and seasonally available every six months.
