Footlights & Firelight at the Fringe

It’s on. The iconic Edinburgh Festival Fringe opens 07 August, running through to 31 August:  3,500-plus shows, 70-plus countries, every pub, church and stairwell in the city turned stage, with street performers working the Royal Mile from breakfast to midnight and Edinburgh Castle presiding over all the action. Look out for Ahir Shah’s Golden, Alex Edelman’s first new hour since Just for Us, and Elf Lyons in The Woman on the Edge, alongside whichever unknown act everyone will be talking about by the second week.

Karma Lake of Menteith places you just an hour’s scenic drive from all of it, and yet a world away in terms of atmosphere. The Trossachs close in, Scotland’s only natural lake goes still, and dinner is Scottish produce plated in a 19th-century manse on the water’s edge. Row out to Inchmahome Island, walk the lake shore, detour to a whisky distillery, then drive in for a 9 pm show and be back in time for a nightcap by the fire.
