Tea was a Chinese monopoly for 1000 years. In 1830s, the British, tired of paying China in silver, stole tea seeds and planted them in Assam and later in Wayanad, Munnar and Nilgiris. India is now the 2nd largest tea producer in the world.
3. The 4 Main Types
*White Tea:* Young buds, dried only. Lightest, most expensive. Low caffeine.
*Green Tea:* Leaves heated quickly (steamed/panned) to stop oxidation. Keeps green color, antioxidants intact. Grassy taste.
*Oolong:* Half-oxidized — between green and black. Complex, floral. Taiwan and Darjeeling famous.
*Black Tea:* Fully oxidized — 90% of what India drinks. Strong, malty. What you get as “chai” in Kerala tapri and in Wayanad’s Chayakada. Assam, Wayanad, Munnar all produce it.
4. Why We Love It
*Science:* L-theanine + caffeine in tea gives calm alertness — unlike coffee’s jitter. That’s why monks meditated with tea.
