It’s been a while since we reported on our Karma Refuge programme, which has been providing shelter and support to families fleeing the war in Ukraine. Behind the headlines, there are so many personal stories – many of them inspiring.
Regular readers may remember when we reported on Karma Head of Philanthropy Victoria Williamson’s decision to foster Ukrainian teenager Valerie Yakshina so that she could come and live with Victoria and her family in London.
With her country still at war, there were few prospects for Valerie – by moving to London, she’s had the opportunity to improve her English and to gain valuable work experience. After working at a local coffee shop, she successfully interviewed for a more senior job at a leading pub and dining room in South West London.
Valerie has truly blossomed in London – it’s heartwarming evidence of what can happen when people are given opportunities in a safe and supportive environment. A confident and capable supervisor at her new place of work – who knows, perhaps someday soon she will join the Karma family, after all, she’s a natural at hospitality!
