Amongst Karma Group Chairman John Spence’s philanthropic proclivities, supporting the next generation of talented young creatives stands tall. It’s a commitment that’s seen him invited as a Visiting Fellow to some of the most prestigious educational institutions in the US. One such institution is UCLA – and once again, John has been invited to teach there for the Fall Semester, working with architecture students who have been invited to Karma Chateau de Samary for a field trip that will push their creativity as we challenge them to come up with innovative ideas and solutions for an enhancement of our Carcassonne country chateau.
From 01 November, under John’s capable guidance, the UCLA students will survey the property and work towards final redevelopment designs that are sympathetic to the local environment, culture and tradition, while at the same time bringing cutting edge and contemporary design approaches into the mix, which prioritise sustainability.
Over the coming weeks, Karma Community will be sharing updates on the students’ progress, specifically focusing on the top floor of the main chateau, as well as the pool house and proposals for additional lodgings and hospitality offerings across the expansive grounds.
At the end of the process, we’ll invite you, our Members, to vote for your favourite design – with a prize going to the winning architecture student.

What timescale is there to undertake and complete the work?
Are there any plans for the “barn” by the parking area opposite the entrance to the château
