The Sisterhood Of Rickshaw Riding Rebels

Across India’s highways and backroads, the humble auto-rickshaw is the country’s most democratic and ubiquitous vehicle: cheap, cheerful, indestructible. In the hands of The Sisterhood, it becomes something else entirely: a rolling platform for women’s empowerment around the world.

Founded in 2006 by Emma Sayle and Catherine Love, and now part of the Ideas Extreme network with Frankie Jay, The Sisterhood is a global community of women committed to practical philanthropy that supports women across the globe. Their premise is simple: ordinary women, working together, can achieve extraordinary things.

Each year they translate that spirit into action through endurance journeys that double as fundraising campaigns. In 2026, the Sisterhood undertook a mammoth road trip covering more than 800 kilometres from east to west. The starting point was Chennai, with teams setting out in auto-rickshaws bound for Goa – an unlikely convoy of small engines, big laughter and serious purpose –timed to arrive for International Women’s Day.

Karma Group supported the journey as it crossed India, continuing a partnership that began with last year’s successful campaign. The collaboration helps amplify The Sisterhood’s work on the ground, particularly projects that support women’s independence and opportunity.

By the time the rickshaws rolled into Goa, dust-streaked and jubilant, the point had been made once again through grit, resolve, camaraderie and three-wheeled wherewithal. Women got the power.
