Spring into early summer is a special time in the Isles of Scilly… when you feel like you’re discovering a delightful local secret. It’s warm enough to swim on calm days, quiet enough to have entire beaches to yourself. At Karma St. Martin’s rooms look straight onto low, white sand and water that shifts from slate to turquoise depending on the weather rolling in off the Atlantic. Nature is literally on your doorstep and she’s putting on a performance.
April and May are peak for wildflowers. The archipelago’s famous narcissi in serried rows across the Islands, thrift and sea campion along the cliffs, while June brings longer evenings and reliable boat links for island-hopping. Walk around St Martin’s, including to the Day Mark, Little Bay and Great Bay are must visits, stop for a swim, then carry on. No traffic, no crowds, just a rhythm set by tides and weather.
There’s plenty going on if you want it: weekly pilot gig races between the islands, small-scale food events, and Tresco Abbey Garden at its most colourful. Looking ahead, a new passenger ferry will improve links from Cornwall from 2027. For now, getting here still requires a bit of effort. Which is exactly why it’s so worth it.
