Fresh from curating an extraordinary fashion show which coincided with the summer party kick off at Karma Beach Bali, Zimbabwe-born Helen Milne, the designer behind elegantly boho fashion brand Miss Milne reveals her inspiration for creating an exclusive new boutique and capsule collection for Karma Kandara.

Can you recall a moment early in your career when you thought: “This is what I’m meant to do”?
*”There were a few moments that really stand out. Having my first collection picked up by Topshop while I was still juggling a full-time job was huge—seeing my name on the rails next to designers I’d admired was surreal. Then being selected as one of London’s ‘Ones to Watch’ and flown in to exhibit at the Saatchi Gallery felt like another big turning point. Living in London gave me some incredible opportunities early in my career. I got to work on a range of high-profile projects—from designing stage costumes for the Sex Pistols, to collaborating with the legendary Jamie Reid on one of his exhibitions, to dressing the likes of Sienna Miller. It was a really exciting time where music, art, and fashion all collided.”*
Your journey took you from Zimbabwe to the fashion capitals of the world. What’s been the most unexpected lesson along the way?
That it doesn’t get easier. You think after years of doing this—after countless collections and deadlines—it would start to feel effortless. But creativity is like a muscle. You have to use it, work through it, and keep pushing it to grow. One of the biggest unexpected lessons has been learning patience—patience with myself, with the process, with the people I work with. Fashion moves fast, but real progress takes persistence and time. You’re constantly evolving… and learning to trust the process.
What role has your heritage or upbringing played in shaping your design philosophy?
Growing up in Zimbabwe definitely shaped my eye—there’s a certain rawness and natural beauty you grow up around that stays with you. Textures, earthy tones, that sense of freedom in how people dress—it all filters in, even unconsciously. At the same time, I’ve lived and worked in London and Bali for most of my adult life, so there’s always this mix: African roots, London edge, and island ease. That balance between strength and softness… it shows up in the collections without me even trying.

You create fashion that’s both feminine and fiercely independent. How do you strike that balance in your designs?
It’s always about contrast. Soft fabrics but clean lines. Romantic shapes with just enough attitude. I design for women who want to feel feminine but never fragile. There’s always a bit of edge—whether it’s in the cut, the way the fabric moves, or how the piece fits when you walk. For me, the real statement is always in the details. The construction, the seams, the fit, the fabric choice… that’s where the work happens. It’s about creating pieces that feel effortless but are anything but.
Where do you find inspiration beyond fashion—in music, film, places, or people?
It’s always been about the culture around me. Where I am, what’s happening, what people are wearing, listening to, creating. I’ve always had an instinct for what women want to wear and what makes them feel different—unique—but still effortless. Whether it’s music, travel, local craft, or even just a mood that’s in the air… it all filters in. It’s less about following trends and more about feeling the shift and translating it into something wearable.
Tell us about the exclusive capsule or experience guests can look forward to at the Karma Beach boutique.
We are very excited about being at Karma Beach this summer, Karma beach is one of Bali’s most iconic coastal spots that stays true to its natural beauty, a sentiment that aligns perfectly with our slow fashion philosophy. The capsule we’ve created for Karma Beach is all about effortless, barefoot luxury. Pieces that work straight from the beach to a long lunch, and then into sunset drinks.
We’ve focused on lightweight silks, natural fabrics, relaxed tailoring, and easy throw-on shapes that still feel elevated. There are a few exclusive colourways and styles designed just for this space. We’ve also brought in some fantastic beach accessories—bags, jewelry, and statement pieces that finish the look. And in July, we’ll be launching the second drop of our swimwear line right here at Karma Beach.
What are your personal must-haves when packing for a dreamy beach escape?
Definitely one of our linen sets—they’re designed to mix and match, so I’ll usually pack a couple of tops and either shorts or pants so I can switch it up. Always Miss Milne swimwear… a bikini and a one-piece, depending on the mood. And one of our silk scarves or fun sarongs—perfect as a head wrap, a top, or a pareo for the beach. And of course… one of our signature slip dresses. The ultimate beach-to-bar piece. Effortless but always a little bit elevated.
What’s something about running a fashion brand that no one ever tells you?
No one really tells you that you don’t have to play the game the way it’s always been played. We have built a slow fashion brand on our own terms – everything crafted under one roof in our studio by a team who have been with us for over a decade. It’s not mass-produced. It’s not trend chasing. Every piece is made with care to last, season after season. It’s about quality, longevity, and staying true to your creative vision – no matter how loud the noise gets. Success isn’t one size fits all. You get to define it.
