For more than 120 years, the Summer Olympics has been the global benchmark of athletic excellence – where humans push the boundaries of what is physically possible across 40 different sports – from archery to athletics, cycling to surfing, boxing to breaking, shooting to swimming.
From 26 July to 11 August, it will be Paris’s turn to host more than 10,000 athletes competing across 329 events. Athletics has always been the centrepiece of The Olympics and track and field enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing stars like Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce going head to head with US star Sha’Carri Richardson and Indian javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra attempting to retain the gold medal he won in Tokyo. Gymnastics phenom Simone Biles makes her long-awaited return in Paris – expect some gravity-defying performances from the US star.
Breakdancing makes its Olympic debut at Paris, bringing fresh energy and urban culture to the Games. Watch out for the world’s best b-boys and b-girls throwing shapes and busting moves on the mat that will make jaws drop.
Other relative newcomer sports include surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing, which debuted in Tokyo, will also return, drawing new audiences to the Games. Keep an eye on Brazil’s Italo Ferreira in surfing and Japan’s Momiji Nishiya in skateboarding as they defend their gold medals.
Karma Members can look forward to extensive coverage of the Games at our resorts around the world. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Karma Chateau de Samary in Carcassonne, you’ll definitely catch the Olympic fever, with lots of events happening across the region.
