Jurassic Journeys: Fossils at Karma La Herriza

The team at Karma La Herriza recently discovered some unexpected residents – ones that have been around for many millions of years! Andalusia’s mountains are a treasure trove of fossils – including near our very own resort.

High above the whitewashed village of Gaucín adjacent to Karma La Herriza, the limestone ridges of the Serranía de Ronda conceal a fossil record stretching back more than 150 million years. These mountains are part of the Baetic Cordillera, where Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones and marls were formed from ancient seabeds. Within their pale layers, fossil hunters can uncover ammonites, belemnites, and rudists—marine creatures that thrived in warm, shallow waters when southern Spain lay beneath the Tethys Ocean. Occasionally, corals and echinoids emerge, their intricate forms frozen in stone. For enthusiasts, it is a window into vanished oceans, etched into the bones of the mountains.

You can check out their finds on your next visit – and we invite you to do your own fossil hunting to help us build up a resort collection — share your finds and tag us on social and you’ll get a beer or a cocktail on us!
