While it seems like Picasso takes the crown with “Garçon à la pipe” smashing records at Sotheby’s in 2004, you might want to take a closer look before shouting bingo. Yes, it was the first painting to cross $100 million at public auction — a historic feat indeed.
        But here’s the catch: are we talking first ever to sell for over $100 million anywhere, or just the first to do so at auction? The difference is subtle, but it might just change your answer. So before locking it in, give the fine print a glance — there’s a small technicality that might be hiding in plain sight. Happy hunting

    4. Answer to #3 is incorrect. While NZ was the first to give women the vote, South Australia was the first to give women the vote AND stand for election.

        While New Zealand was indeed the first country to grant women the right to vote in 1893, it did not initially allow women to stand for Parliament. That distinction goes to South Australia, which in 1894 became the first place in the world to grant women both the right to vote and to stand as candidates in parliamentary elections.

        So yes — South Australia holds that very important dual milestone. Great catch!
