Bavaria with Altitude: 5 Alpine Wonders

Nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps above Lake Schliersee, Karma Bavaria offers a gateway to lesser-known wonders – where nature, history and local flavour collide. Here are five experiences that soar above the ordinary.

Echoes of Oberammergau

Just 25 minutes from Karma Bavaria, the mountain village of Oberammergau is famed for its once-a-decade Passion Play staged outdoors (the next one is 2032!) But visit off-season for woodcarving workshops, frescoed houses and a palpable sense of old-world piety still rooted in the forested hills.

Hike to Partnach Gorge

Skip the tourist crowds and head for the dramatic Partnachklamm, a winding gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen where icy meltwater carves through limestone cliffs. Just 1.5 hours from Karma Bavaria, it features steel walkways and tunnels revealing surging turquoise currents and glacial serenity in motion.

Lake Schliersee by Rowboat

Paddle across Karma Bavaria’s neighbouring Lake Schliersee in a vintage wooden rowboat as early morning mist clings to pine-clad slopes. Stop for smoked fish and a stein at a lakeside Gasthaus, or dive in for a bracing freshwater swim.

Kaiserschmarrn and Schnapps in a Hütte

Take a guided hike to a traditional Almhütte (Alpine Hut) ensconced in the uplands above Bayrischzell. Inside: warm timber, homemade schnapps, and Kaiserschmarrn—a shredded pancake dish once beloved by emperors, now fuel for highland wanderers.

Wendelstein Cave and Observatory

Ride the vintage cogwheel railway up Wendelstein Mountain, then descend into one of Germany’s highest caves. Above, an observatory scans Alpine skies (guided tours available every Friday). Science and folklore share the summit on this surreal and beautiful Bavarian peak.
