The Magic of Angkor Wat

Just a stone’s throw from Karma Bayon – our stunning new retreat in Siem Reap, Angkor Wat rises from the jungle like a fever dream of stone and history. And for many centuries it lay hidden from view, swallowed by the jungle that surrounds it.  More than a thousand years ago, this monumental temple complex was the beating heart of the Khmer Empire – a civilisation so advanced they were building multi-lane highways when European cities were little more than muddy settlements.

Rediscovered in 1860 by French explorer Henri Mouhot, who reportedly stumbled upon the site half-delirious with tropical fever, Angkor Wat has stories etched into every carved stone. Legend has it that the temple’s construction required such mathematical precision that workers would be executed for the slightest miscalculation – a management technique that makes modern performance reviews seem positively gentle.

Built by legendary reformer and temple builder King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, the central temple’s five towers represent Mount Meru, the mythical home of the gods. Intricate bas-reliefs tell stories of Hindu mythology, while the massive moat and outer walls showcase the extraordinary engineering of the Khmer people.

To truly experience Angkor, arrive at sunrise. Watch the golden light slowly illuminate the ancient stones, casting long shadows across courtyards that have witnessed centuries of human drama. Explore the intricate galleries, climb the steep steps to the central tower, and lose yourself in the mystical atmosphere of this truly one-of-a-kind UNESCO World Heritage site.
